Again in 2018, it has been an honour and pleasure to be the Chairman of Judges at the Asia-Pacific Commercial Mediation Competition. I was joined on the judging panel at this year’s event by some of the world’s top mediation experts.

Hosted by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which represents the International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICC) in Australia, the competition brings together tomorrow’s business leaders and legal minds from across the Asia-Pacific region to better meet the dispute resolution needs for international business.

During the 3 day competition, from Friday 27 July 2018 until Sunday, 29 July 2018 at the Melbourne Commercial Arbitration and Mediation Centre, there were 13 teams, representing Universities from around Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Finalists from the University of NSW and OP Jindal Global University, India with Peter McMullin

We judged the ultimate winner as the team representing the University of NSW (UNSW), who claimed their victory in a hotly contested final against India University O.P.Jindal Global University.

This UNSW team will now have the exciting opportunity to travel to Paris in France to represent our region at the ICC Mediation Competition final in February 2019 which is a competition that I also attend, representing the region as a judge.

As part of this year’s competition, we awarded the Peter McMullin Prize. 2018 saw the Peter McMullin Prize being awarded to Celil Kardaslar from Victoria University, Melbourne Australia. Judged amongst other things on tenacity, Celil Kardaslar and his team demonstrated great determination and resolve to manage the competition, especially in the first months without a coach.
