During my recent visit to Timor-Leste, a highlight was visiting the newly operational Balibo Dental Clinic.

Balibo is a place that holds particular sentiment for me. When the opportunity arose to assist with the Funding to build this Balibó Dental Clinic, Ruth and I thought it was a great opportunity to support the region through the development of a facility that will enhance and improve the lives of everyone in the Balibo community.

The construction of the dental clinic at the rear of the Flag House has finished and the clinic was officially opened on August 24 2016. The opening was conducted by the former President HE Jose Ramos Horta.

Purpose

The purpose of the Balibo Dental Clinic is to improve the oral health of the local population by providing access to dental treatment, community education and prevention programs. There are very few dentists in Timor-Leste, most of whom are located in Dili. Until now there has been no dental services available in Balibó and even a very limited dental service available in Maliana.

Funding

To make this vital Balibo Dental Clinic possible The Balibo House Trust partnered with the Rotary Clubs of Keilor and Port Melbourne to construct and equip the clinic. They were also been supported by the Rotary Clubs of Packenham, Carlton and Berwick as well as Rotary International. The Trust has also received invaluable financial support from the Victorian Health Department, myself and my wife – Peter and Ruth McMullin and Ellerston Capital.
